Two New Reviews For
IN THE VILLAGE !

Bronwyn and
Musical Director
Mischa Kischkum

MINI-REVIEW BY STU HAMSTRA:
BRONWYN RUCKER'S "IN THE VILLAGE" at DON'T TELL MAMA
(343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) on Friday, November 30th, at 7:00 pm.

The great thing about cabaret is that each show is pretty much what the performer would
like it to be. In spite of attempts to set rules, boundaries and protocols, cabaret is what it
wants to be - and that's why it is so difficult to define. Sort of reminds me of watching my
Twitter Stream the other night when the popular music awards were being presented on TV.
We don't have cable or over the air reception here (we rely on NETFLIX) so I wasn't watching
the program, just the comments flowing past on Twitter. And again and again, someone
would note: "That's not music!" or "That's not singing!" When I was in High School and popular
music was transitioning from Pat Boone to Elvis Presley, I remember the same comments
being made!

Last night, Bronwyn put on a show that was 100% cabaret - and great entertainment to boot,
that many "cabaret purists" would frown on.   She presented the songs of several of her
composer friends in no particular theme, just songs and semi-songs that she loves - some
written especially for her.  The excitement and enthusiasm, both on stage and in the audience,
was incredible!  Off the charts!  One song was performed by Bronwyn atop the piano - for no
particular reason except "because she could!"  She included a long section from one of her
most famous shows of the past "A Subway Named Desire" that had everyone roaring with
laughter.  Songs from her CD "RADON DAUGHTERS" were included as well - street songs
performed during the protest era of the 60s and the emerging feminist movement that
accompanied it.

Not content with center stage, Bronwyn makes use of every inch of the cabaret room -
wandering left, right, center, and even into the audience at times. A trained actress, every
movement, motion and expression serves to bring out every last ounce of the lyrics, often
changing accents and even vocal tone and timbre to get the point across.  An incredible,
riveting performance.

She has her annual Christmas show coming up at MAMA'S on December 16th - filled with
holiday traditions of her own making and always a visit from Joe Franklin (who was at last
night's show).  I can't wait!
